Trails
of Northeast Marin County Recreation Map • 2nd Edition!
Trails of Northeast Marin is the first detailed map of parks and trails overlooking San Rafael and Novato. It shows a wide area from China Camp State Park on the shores of San Pablo Bay to Olompali State Historic Park on the oak-clad slopes of Mt. Burdell, and inland to Loma Alta and Big Rock Ridge, two of the most prominent peaks north of Mt. Tamalpais. Using this map you can discover miles of hidden trails just minutes from US 101, get in touch with the natural environment, and enjoy grand views of Mt. Tam, San Pablo Bay, and Frank Lloyd Wright's Marin County Civic Center. Get to know the history of this place, including a Native American museum, a reconstructed Miwok village, historic barns and ranches, and a Chinese shrimp fishing camp.
Marin County Open Space District preserves shown on this map include Mount Burdell, Loma Alta, Indian Valley, Rush Creek, and Lucas Valley (Big Rock Ridge Area). Also shown is a corner of Mt. Tamalpais Watershed (Sky Oaks, Bon Tempe Lake and Phoenix Lake areas), which you may already know from the Olmsted & Bros. map of Mt. Tamalpais and the Marin Headlands. (This map starts where Olmsted's map leaves off). This is the territory you see FROM Mt. Tam (and you'll get some wonderful views of Mt. Tam).
The second edition shows the new Bay Area Ridge Trail connecting Loma Alta and Big Rock Ridge – one of the prettiest trails in Marin County. It also summarizes the November, 2003 Golden Gate Transit service cuts' effect on park access.
Parks on this map are a good introduction to Marin's inland habitats -- the rolling ridges clad in oak, bay, and madrone alternating with grassland, which contrast with the more wind-swept coastal scrub habitats you find in areas like the Marin Headlands and Pt. Reyes. It's especially nice in the spring, with exceptional wildflowers.
